FOLLOWER [download]

In september this year i made another trip over to New York to immerse myself in that city's awesome community of young musicians/ creative people. well, actually i guess that was more the side project to the US visit, objective numero uno would be taking my mum on holiday. but in between the shopping trips to bloomingdales and sightseeing (no we didn't go to ground zero) i managed a night out, got totally wasted, alone, and saw some wicked bands.

so i head to a warehouse bordering queens and brooklyn, downstairs is bar and array of diy computer games (!?), upstairs was wall of sofas and floor space for bands, backdrop was giant murals of monstrous creatures, of course. this place was trendy to fuck but pretty dead. a chance meeting a few weeks later, in london, with one of the guy's that lives there goes a ways to explaining it's apparent lack of a crowd, as despite being well known amongst bands and musicians as one of the places to play an awesome diy show in new york, it never quite caught the attention of the natives being as it was almost outside of brooklyn!
anyway, i'm settled on the sofa-wall, post first band, pouring another whiskey into my already 2/3rds whiskey filled bottle of diet coke when MIRROR MIRROR take to the floor. These three guys are really great live, recordings on the website/spotify in no way do them justice, they're really involving and electric live. and really seemed to give a fuck, despite literally a max of two rows of people watching them at the height of the crowd's interest. killer.

Following them were... FOLLOWER. i was totally out of it by their set but this duo almost brought me back to a state of lucid consciousness with their heartfelt, demanding but minimal electronic hip hop.

the music cut through the fog of whiskey and weed that was my mind, just enough so that I might force myself to remember their name.
and that's all I remember... that and the sense that i've just seen a fucking incredible new band.

Roseanne Barrr will play new songs [download]

R.B. have been shredding hearts across the capital long enough now to know how to play their instruments/shout their vox with the right amount of bravado, gusto and wit(o) to deliver maximum emotional thrill. You'd rather watch Roe Bee than Party Of Five complete second season DVD boxset, anyday... but god willing, if the Victoria Mile End have a projector, you won't have to choose!!
They play for club MïLK at that aforementioned awesome pub this Saturday!

their sensational debut album 'Dumb Broad' is out now via Hex Out Tapes, but almost SOLD OUT be sure to grab one, before you have to curse yourself for missing a milestone of music in audio format soon to be obsolete, replaced with visio-sound (post-digital), right?

Michal Local Kid made a video of the special release party we held at PureGroove London some time ago, to celebrate the CHAPS 'we're so skatebored' (MïLK 001!!) and Roseanne Barrr 'dumb broad' (H.O.T.) cassettes simultaneous releases!

Chaps + Roseanne Barrr • live in London 2009

They will be playing some NEW SONGS this Saturday along with a medley of classics.
They once wrote a song about the people in the room below their practice space holding Warhammer tournaments (or whatever they're called... Engagements?) Games Workshop style, you know? '...pushing your men around'
terrific.

HALO HALO are Jack and Rachel. they make beautiful music together! they went to Korea and made this music video! Brilliant!

They have two cats! Klaus and Una. they are two of the best people in London, and there's only a dozen or so 'best' people so that's pretty good going.

club MïLK / GROPETOWN / ROSEANNE BARRR + MORE

GROPETOWN are travelling down from Scotland with their pals GUMMY STUMPS to play for us in London. If you saw powerhouse banshee Julia stand in as front-woman for ULTIMATE THRUSH at YES WAY last month you'll know not to miss this! UT's performance was certainly the highlight of the fest for me, helped in no small way by Julia. She joined by UT's Laurie as members of GROPETOWN'S chaotic-cirque-no-core.

I'm also really looking forward to Ethical Debating Society, haven't seen them play since my old band shared the Barden's* stage with them aaaaages ago when they had a completely different line-up.

Plus faves Roseanne Barrr return to club MïLK, lightnin' drums/ killer strums! made up of Sophie (Woolf) and Patrick (Husbands) // sidenote, i've been trying to force† patrick into getting his other band together to play the all dayer we're doing in November, or like, ANY date they can play, with no luck as yet. They only played the all dayer last year because Sophie asked him! I almost got them to play in Maidstone like 4 years ago so i'm hoping a london show is on the cards

Plus dream line up gets even dreamier with Chapter Sweetheart in attendance - again, last saw these when we shared a stage, at this very venue! fall in love...

Not to mention
this is all for F R E E

BELLIES! CASSETTE / MILK 005

Our latest release comes from Bristol off kilter post-whatever foodies BELLIES!.

Made up of one part Drunk Granny and one part (the) Jelas this lives up to the greatness of both those acts and while claiming it's own ground is still heartily rooted in jarring tunesmith punk. I haven't had the time or desire to think up other bands their sound could be compared to because the songs won't get out of my head! they won't leave me alone!

Non-normative melodies swirl and rumble like a well fed stomach. I've been listening to them non-stop since I received the tracks for this cassette EP (8 tracks... more a mini-album?) and have had their voices take up residence in my cranium. 'My-my Singing Brain'.

The fruity coloured cassettes are limited to just 50 copies! Make sure you pick one up from our online shop (link below) or from the band themselves when they return to the UK following their whirlwind tour of North America!

you can listen over on their myspace and ORDER THE CASSETTE!

FABQUEER FEST

Fabulosa Fest
This is happening in CA, USA right now! I wish my band were playing, or that I could be attending. even just to be there for the "closing blessings".

"The FABULOSA Collective creates fund-raising parties where diverse groups of women and friends come together to celebrate Women-centered arts and raise money for LGBTQ-oriented causes. Fabulosa Fest is an inclusive feminist gathering for women, their families and friends of all genders."

Run by Jenny Hoyston, Judea Eden and Dawn Huston. All proceeds are donated to charity. Looks pretty fucking fabulous. embracing my inner goddess so hard right now.

AND THEN

at the end of the month is another festival i tried in vain to get my band on! not bitter.

Copenhagen Queerfestival

"We want people to feel that they can let their hair down (or cut it all off)"

"why have a sex party?"
Because Rae Spoon is playing it. Maybe.

...

We're playing YES WAY anyway, at least we can get there on the bus.

DIVORCE/ULTIMATE THRUSH split/ sold

Hey,

So the MILK cassette releases have been flying off the shelves, and by shelves i mean my bedside table drawers.

The latest comes from the Glasgow based powerhouses ULTIMATE THRUSH and DIVORCE.
these are two of the most killer live acts in the world right now. you have to see them play. either. BOTH. luckily they tend to play on the same bill quite a lot. I looked on youtube for some footage, but don't even bother, just go and see them if you ever get the chance. Yeah and BUY THIS TAPE!

Ultimate Thrush have this power-insanity thing, where it can seem out of control and like a... volcano... but then you catch the sound of riff and look over and Ollie's just groovin like he's in Lonnie Donnegan's skiffle group. My God, they just get better the more you see them, by now i can only assume they're like... fucking... reaaaally good!

And Divorce slay. They slay like Buffy. they kill it. they kill your preconceived notions of punk... of noise, which now you realize were just ludicrous. no. the dial doesn't stop at 10. it stops at DIVORCE.

So now you totally want to buy the tape? well I sold out of them days ago. You can't get one from me, but you can get it from -------->

DIVORCE'S big cartel

ROUGH TRADE SHOPS

or if you happen to be in Japan - ESCALATOR records

Or like i've been shoving down your throats you could GO AND SEE THEM PLAY AND BUY A TAPE FROM THEIR SWEATY POST SHOW HANDS!

PEEPHOLES / HUNGRY FOR POWER

i only want to talk about my favourite bands all the time to the exclusion of all else... except star trek... and i have very little to say about any other subject so perhaps that's for the best.

P E E P H O L E S are fantastic and have managed to release a 12" of powerful echo drenched synth-mechano-pop! It's available now and is fantastic. Side A is 3 of the catchiest noises you're likely to hear this year,; 'Ladder', ''Lair' and 'Chika'. Expect to be humming the latter to yourself for months to come. I can't get the chorus out of my head, despite it being virtually unintelligible (I doubt even Uhura could understand what Kat Peepholes is saying). Side B offers a remix of 'Chika' from Chicago's EYES which illuminates Peepholes' lyrics but also seems to verge on becoming some kind of lost penguin nonsense. There's also an it's-summer-on-Vulcan style rework of 'Lair' by E*ROCK which is really very, very nice indeed.

I prefer the Peepholes side to the remix side, which is exactly as it should be.

I should also mention the cover artwork. awesome. Nick Peepholes takes on the role of mysterious figure draped in curtain on a giant rock. What's a nice touch is that the few rocks clearly used to hold the curtains edges flat haven't been photoshopped out but left for all to see, and then on the reverse of the cover a second shot is used minus mysterious figure, but the necessary hold-down-curtain rocks have ben repositioned into the exact same places, as if the phantom guy de-materialised. Perhaps someone beamed him up?

'Lair' EP is out now on Hungry For Power label out of Brighton. You can buy it by following that link but you could also buy the great value meal deal of Peepholes' 'Lair' / Cold Pumas' 'Jela' saving you £3!! It's well worth it as that Cold Pumas 12" is pretty great too!

Expect really interesting releases from Hungry For Power. I think I'm right in saying a regular bloggo/ musical artisan associated with the legendary 20 Jazz Funk Greats is behind this endeavour.

Here's the ever so dramatic promo vid for the 12"

SO GOOD! Captain Janeway would be proud.

HUMOUSEXUAL/ HOMOCRIME

very rare appearance from the H O M O C R I M E stalwarts at The Windmill, Brixton, THIS THURSDAY. With forthcoming 7" on everard records, the london/berlin duo will hopefully not go on first (!) as the flyer indicates but just in case I would suggest geting to the Windmill in good time.

PLUS it's the first ever gig for the south london SUPERGROUP -WOOLF- ... this band features Sophie Roseanne Barrr, Irene Corey Orbison, Colette Ricochet Ricochet/ Gender Fascist... and another girl, Georgina... sorry to 4th member, i don't know you, i think she was in Honeyz... NOW THAT'S PEDIGREE. Can't wait to see them, believe it will be powerful.

I never went to a HOMOCRIME event but wish I had. I just never dug into the underground london scene mid-noughties, not being from london or ever going out in the city. Check them out, queers with big ideas. This was an amazing night- diy, idealistic and inclusive. Their singles club was the attempt to make good on the dream of releasing a new cd every month, given away at the night.
AND now! NOW! THE WHOLE LOT ARE DOWNLOADABLE FROM THE WEBSITE!

"music by our friends: people who inspired us."

happy days.

T ∑ ∑ T H have been busy touring with e&e, making beatiful music with super-projuicer Rory Brattwell, and destroying the lives and reputations of Will Self and Lady GaGa.

'Jammers...' is a retrospective of early recordings, live tracks and practice jams.
The cassette is to be released early March, but you can pay me for it now if you like and i'll send it to you as soon as i do 'em.

Cravin' Wine/ Light Asylum

i am desperate for a glass of red wine. and have been since 11 am. i would really enjoy it. every last drop. I have to go to tesco.
anyway.
It's 2010, and I love Light Asylum

in sep '09 i went to new york and under the advisement of my homegirl Sister Mantos saw the incredible LIGHT ASYLUM at some pseudo-goth dive. think leather dungeon meets old blue last.
I saw them, and now I know what going to church is like for the evangelical. But of course, i've never been to church, and can only imagine it to be exactly as you see it on youtube? with loads of flamboyantly dressed people gyrating all over the pulpit and some hevvy old-skool rave soundtrack pumping out over the buck-wild congregation. Yeah i felt like that... and also the church is haunted by the ghost of Stevie Nicks and she's crying tears that explode into amethyst as they hit the gospel choir.
Some genius has put up a song from that gig on youtube. =
